Outdoor Landscaping Projects: Sod Installation

Premium Sod Installation

This is the easiest way and creates an instant lawn! Our Team would come to your home or commercial property and start by removing the existing turf by using sod cutters or a skid steer. Then, if necessary, we would use an attachment called a rock hound, to remove any larger rocks in the soil that would create unfavorable growing conditions for the roots of the new sod. Our comprehensive sod installation process includes professional soil preparation and grading, as well as premium sod selection.

Traditional Seeding

The results for this application are not instant and require much more work once installed, however, the cost savings are significant compared to sod.

Our seeding process features:

  • Thorough ground preparation
  • Premium seed selection
  • Mushroom compost application
  • Erosion protection
  • Ongoing care guidance

Hydroseeding Technology

Hydroseeding is a technique that mixes grass seed, water, fertilizer, seed mulch, and a bonding agent in a large tank and then sprays the mixture through a high pressure hose onto the ground to establish grass quickly and efficiently.

Benefits of Hydroseeding:

  • Even application for consistent results
  • Enhanced germination rates
  • Excellent erosion control

The Stockman Advantage

Pittsburgh’s Local Grass Expertise

Based on our experinece, there are three types of grass that usually thrive in the Pittsburgh climate.

  • Kentucky Bluegrass – Kentucky Bluegrass is cold tolerant, wear tolerant, and moderately heat and drought tolerant. When watered and fertilized properly, you will get a nice dark green color that really looks elegant.
  • Tall Fescue – Being the most heat and drought tolerant of the cool season turfgrasses, Tall Fescue is an option for almost every application. It is also very durable and persistent, which allows tall fescue to be a great option for home lawns, parks, playgrounds, and athletic fields.
  • Perennial Ryegrass – This lawn choice can be described as a dark green, medium textured turfgrass, Perennial Ryegrass is used in multiple applications, including home lawns, parks, and athletic fields. Germination rates are quick, allowing for fast growth. Because of this, Perennial Ryegrass is most often used for overseeding thin or damaged growth.

Our Clients Love Us

I just had my front yard landscaped by Stockman. It hasn’t been touched in 40 years. They removed bushes and grass that was there, and replaced with healthier and low maintenance alternatives. From the first meeting with Dan, through the crew showing up and doing the work, it was the best experience I’ve ever had hiring a contractor. We were able to work well together, making any changes that seemed appropriate. The finished product is gorgeous. And neighbors keep stopping by to complement the work.

“After seeing the Stockman Lawnscape team doing work on a neighbor’s home, I asked to speak to someone about an estimate. I was referred to Austin who quite simply could not have been more responsive and accommodating. He. Is. Awesome! He promptly returned my call (a rarity these days!) and set up a time for an in-person estimate. He took the time to listen to my ideas and brought his own creativity to the project. As promised, he followed up with an estimate a few days later and even worked with me on a few modifications to the plan to bring it in at my desired budget. He was able to schedule installation the very next day!

Common Questions about New Lawn Installation

What does the lawn installation process involve?

There are multiple ways to achieve creating a new lawn at your home or business.

The process varies based on your chosen method:

  • For Sod Installation: Our Team would come to your home or commercial property and start by removing the existing turf by using sod cutters or a skid steer. Then, if necessary, we would use an attachment called a rock hound, to remove any larger rocks in the soil that would create unfavorable growing conditions for the roots of the new sod. After that, if the area needed to be regraded, we would install a layer of fresh topsoil.
  • For Seeding: Our Team will prepare the area by removing the old turf with a sod cutter or skid steer. The area will be removed of all rocks and/or debris. During this installation, our Team would add a new layer of topsoil, approximately 2 inches in depth. Grass seed and starter fertilizer will be applied to the area.
  • For Hydroseeding: Hydroseeding is a technique that mixes grass seed, water, fertilizer, seed mulch, and a bonding agent in a large tank and then sprays the mixture through a high pressure hose onto the ground to establish grass quickly and efficiently.

How do I choose between sod, seeding, and hydroseeding?

  • Sod: Best for immediate results and instant lawn transformation
  • Seeding: Most economical option but requires more time and maintenance
  • Hydroseeding: Middle-ground option offering better results than traditional seeding at a lower cost than sod

How long does it take to establish a new lawn?

Timeline varies by installation method:

  • Sod: Instant lawn appearance with root establishment in 2-3 weeks
  • Traditional Seeding: Longer establishment period with gradual growth
  • Hydroseeding: Faster germination than traditional seeding due to enhanced growing conditions

What maintenance is required after installation?

After the sod is installed, watering properly is paramount. Our Team will provide you with specific watering instructions to give you the ability to take care of your new lush, green lawn.

How does a new lawn help with erosion control?

Reducing soil erosion and runoff is a significant reason to install a new lawn. If you have a slope that is unstable and creates drainage issues, installing grass in that area is a good solution to help remedy that issue and create proper drainage.

What’s the best time of year for lawn installation?

For optimal results in Pittsburgh:

  • Early fall is ideal for most installations
  • Spring is the second-best time
  • Summer installations require extra care and watering
