Why Drainage Matters
Our Pittsburgh Hardscaping Services
Retaining Walls
Retaining walls are built out of necessity, to hold up hillsides, combat terrain, and manage where water goes. Our team handles everything from functional hillside stabilization to elegant, tiered garden walls. Any wall over four feet requires a permit, engineering, and geo grid. We manage the full permitting and engineering process so you don’t have to.

Premium Materials for Your Pittsburgh Hardscape Design
Choosing the right materials is one of the most important decisions in any hardscaping project. Our team offers professional recommendations based on what makes the most sense from a visual aspect, because your hardscaping has to function correctly, but you also have to look at it and enjoy it every day.
We make sure our recommendations complement the color of your siding, the shingles on your roof, and the overall style of your home so that everything looks natural and ties together.
That natural look could include pre-manufactured pavers, or it could incorporate a natural stone boulder wall that fits in with the aesthetic of your home. Every property is different, and material styles go through trends. Whether your home is farmhouse or more contemporary and modern, we make sure the materials match with its style.
Our team partners with premium material suppliers including Lampus, Unilock, Techo Bloc, EP Henry, and Cambridge. We also handle stone veneer installation as the finishing layer on outdoor kitchens, columns, seating walls, and fireplaces. The structural block goes in first, then the veneer wraps it so the feature reads as part of your home rather than something bolted on.
Our Hardscaping Project Process: From First Call to Final Walkthrough
When you choose Stockman Lawnscape as your hardscaping contractor in Pittsburgh, you get a dedicated team that keeps you informed at every step.
|
Step 1: Consultation and Design |
We have a dedicated salesperson who sells hardscape projects. He will reach out, set up an appointment that’s convenient for you, and send you information about the company prior to the first meeting. He will then meet with you, listen to what your needs are, and provide professional opinions on solutions. If it requires a 3D design, we can create one showing what the final project would look like with your actual house featured in the design. |
|
Step 2: Pre-Project Walkthrough |
Prior to the project, we’ll do a walkthrough to make sure everyone’s on the same page – the homeowner, the salesperson, and an operations manager running the crew. Together, they will confirm the color of materials, style of materials, and what the overall plan is. |
|
Step 3: Expert Installation |
A group text will be set up featuring the project manager, the salesperson, and yourself so everyone can stay updated throughout the project. Our crews follow all ICPI and NCMA specifications on every project. |
|
Step 4: Final Walkthrough and Follow-Up |
At the end of the project, the same group of individuals will meet on site to do a walkthrough to make sure you’re satisfied with the end result. Then, we follow up with warranty information and care instructions. We also follow up six months later to make sure everything is still looking the way it’s supposed to. |
Why Hardscaping in Pittsburgh Requires Local Expertise
Pittsburgh’s terrain and climate create challenges that set it apart from other markets. During winter, we have a lot of freeze and thaw, so making sure that your base is done properly is super important. Here’s what our team accounts for on every project.
| Challenge | How We Handle It |
|---|---|
| Freeze-Thaw Cycles | Proper compaction of the base is the first step completed to prevent shifting and cracking through Pittsburgh winters. |
| Hilly Terrain | Our team designs for where the water will go when it runs down a hill, planning drainage from day one. |
| Drainage Management | Water is the enemy to everything on the hardscaping side, and every project includes a plan for managing it. |
| Township Code Compliance | We handle the full permitting process, including engineering for retaining walls over four feet. Requirements vary by township. |
The Return on Investment of Professional Hardscaping
Right now, the best ROI is on outdoor living spaces
While retaining walls serve a necessary structural function, an outdoor living space provides an opportunity to make memories with your family, have people over and entertain, and enjoy a space outside your home that really makes sense to invest in, because you’re going to get that money back if you sell your home.
How Long Does Hardscaping Last and How to Maintain It
25–30 years with proper installation and care
Retaining walls and patios, if they’re installed properly, should last 25 to 30 years if they’re being taken care of properly. Here’s what proper maintenance looks like:
- Resealing – Every few years, reseal your patio to protect it from the elements. You can seal retaining walls too. We offer sealing services to our clients.
- Joint re-sanding – Be sure to sweep in poly sand between the joints of pavers. Sometimes that wears away over time, so power wash it out, put new sand in, and reseal. We recommend that every couple of years.
- Drain checks – Watch to make sure your drains are not clogging and you’re still getting drainage during rain. If you see water streaming out of a wall drain, something needs attention.
When to Start Planning Your Pittsburgh Hardscape Project
The Bottom Line: Plan Early
We always try to get people to make decisions pretty early on in the year, just because of the time it takes.
We also look at things in the wintertime for the people who want to be proactive and be prepared. We have more flexibility in the winter, and we’re looking to build a backlog in our schedule and start having things lined up so that when we get to spring, we hit the ground running. If we have times in the winter when the weather is mild and it’s not snowing, we can get out there as long as the ground’s not frozen.
Whether you’re ready to start now or planning ahead for next season, reaching out early gives you the best selection of materials, scheduling priority, and time to get your design exactly right.
Warranties and Financing
We offer craftsmanship warranties – not anything to do with the material, but if it’s installed improperly, we’ll come out and take care of that. And that’s also transferable, so if you sell your home, that warranty rolls over to the next homeowner.

FAQs About Hardscaping in Pittsburgh
How Long Does a Hardscaping Project Take?
Depending on the size of the project, timelines can vary. A standard paver patio can typically be installed in under two weeks, while larger outdoor living spaces or retaining wall projects may take 30 days or more. We can still turn things around pretty quickly, and your dedicated project manager will provide a detailed timeline during the proposal phase.
What Is the Difference Between Hardscaping and Softscaping?
The easiest way to think about it is: if you touch something, is it hard or soft? Hardscape includes any sort of concrete surface, retaining wall, pavers – even concrete sidewalks. It’s more construction driven. Softscape is more plant driven – installing different shrubs, different trees, new sod, or a new lawn. You hardscape in areas that you’re going to be able to use or stand on, or places where you want to hold up hillsides.
Do I Need a Permit for My Hardscaping Project?
It’s really township dependent in the area that we service – not everyone is exactly the same. If you’re putting a patio in, you really don’t need permits as long as you’re not messing with too much elevation. But any retaining wall over four feet requires a permit from an engineer. Our team handles all permitting and coordinates with local authorities on your behalf.
What Kind of Maintenance Does Hardscaping Require?
If installed properly, retaining walls and patios should last 25 to 30 years with proper care. Every few years, you might need to reseal your patio and re-sand some of the joints with poly sand. We recommend that every couple of years. Stockman Lawnscape offers maintenance services to keep your hardscape investment in top condition.
