Welcome back! It has been an absolutely wonderful and busy summer for us at Stockman Lawnscape. Because of how busy we have been, we have let the blog start to get cobwebs! But we are going to change that by having a weekly blog to stay up to date and give you some good, useful information on all topics of the landscape industry. We will also be providing updates within the company as well. So, let’s jump into this week’s topic, which is an important one for this time of year, Fall Leaf Cleanup.

Prevents Pest and Disease

The most important reason to do a leaf cleanup. Leaving the leaves on the ground over the winter can cause pests such as moles and mice to use them as cover beneath the snow. This can cause damage to the yard, but also your trees and shrubs where they chew on the bark to obtain some nutrients.

Another key to removing leaves from the yard is to prevent any diseases to your turf lawn. Diseases such as snow mold is one of the biggest proponents in not removing leaves in the fall. Snow mold usually occurs when there is a snow melt over a duration of time while the ground is also not completely frozen. Leaves can attribute to this by creating a warm blanket layer on the surface of your lawn in turn allowing this fungus to create its perfect habitat.

Allows Your Yard to Breath

Doing a fall cleanup allows your yard to breath in the most natural scientific explanation, photosynthesis. For your grass to stay healthy, it must create the cycle of photosynthesis. By not removing the leaves, it creates that barrier from the lawn to receive the sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide necessary to keep thriving. Also, if you want to think if it this way, the byproduct of photosynthesis is oxygen, so in theory you will be helping yourself breath too!

Keeps Your Yard Looking Fantastic

This reason is the “wow” factor in the landscape industry. Doing a leaf cleanup just makes your yard look so much better when it is clean and tidy after doing a cleanup. The appearance of before and after is tremendous and also makes you stand out among your neighbors!

There is always another side to the coin, which in this case is the benefits of not doing a cleanup. Although there are some benefits, such as composting and creating nutrients for your yard. It is not a heavy topic enough to sway us away from those points listed above. However, I will not say that composting your leaves is not a bad idea as it can eventually lead to good soil and nutrients down the road. However, I would suggest using a dedicated space where it will not affect the use of the entire property.

Well that is a wrap on this week’s topic! I hope you enjoyed learning a bit of why it is a good idea to do a fall leaf cleanup. If you would be interested in learning more about our prices to complete a fall cleanup for you, please give us a call and we will be more than happy to speak with you!

Enjoy your week everyone!
